IceSight

IDI has developed an electro-optical sensor that can distinguish ice and snow from wet or dry pavement. Temperature sensors are not used – neither for the air nor the pavement. Rather, the spectral differences of ice and water in the infra-red spectrum are utilized.

The IceSight system works on the principal of spectral absorption bands in the near infrared region that allows distinguishing between different states of water. The system is currently in pre-production and deployed at DOT Remote Weather Information Systems (RWIS) sites in the Northeast.

IDI has recently adapted this near infrared ice detection technology to aircraft systems, and has recently flight tested a prototype field unit. A task to package the device for aircraft use is underway.

  • RWIS sites
  • Automatic spray anti-icing
  • Known hazardous roads
