Weather Sensors
Pavement icing is a significant safety hazard on many highways
and bridges. Road crews apply salt and sand to improve traction
but many accidents occur in spite of these actions. Road safety
would be significantly improved by deploying wide-area icing
sensors that could survey large roadway sections. These sensors
could be linked to traffic monitoring centers which could then
warn motorists of unsafe conditions as well as dispatch salt
and sand trucks to alleviate the problem.
In addition, these sensors have a variety of other applications,
such as monitoring aircraft runways and taxiways, and sidewalk
icing conditions.
